*** Wexford Senior Road Race ***Report by Luca O'Connor, photos by Ann Marie LyngThere was excitement and tension in the air in Enniscorthy on Friday night. The Old Dublin Road was swarmed with crowds in the Strider Colours. We had great success in both the men's and women’s categories, with Striders bringing nearly 40 racers all together. It was a hot evening as the women’s race began, they raced down the road with the Strider’s team sticking together. They came back around in under 19 minutes, with Clodagh Kelly, Croghan, leading the race. Kate Reidy was the first Strider home, in 6th place. Then Sandra Young, Beth O’Connor and Katie Murphy to finish off the team. The team ran the race close together and all came in strong. We also had Mary Sinnott and Victoria Swan in the race, both of them delivering great performances and finishing fast and strong. Liz Conway and Sinead Croke ran as well, they ran a steady race and got good times. The Kilmore A.C Women’s team won, with the Striders team being a close second.Next came the men’s race, which was two loops of the Old Dublin Road. David Mahon of Slaney Olympic, the pre-race favourite was sporting a new haircut for the race. The Strider’s men were out in force, ready to reclaim the senior title they had lost in the cross country. We were missing a few due to injury: James Boland, Fabian Flood, Joe Lillis, David Kehoe and John Byrne are all on the road to recovery. One or two such as Pat Murray and Jamie Cullen were unavailable on the night. There were still plenty of men there though, all eager for a chance at glory. The race started out fast, with the runners belting down the lane. We didn’t see them till they came back around, with David Mahon out in front. He had a comfortable lead, but our own Paul Doran wasn’t too far behind. Scott James and Adam O’Connor were places 5th and 6th, working together. Finally came Alan O’Connor to round off our first team. Colin Carney led out our second team, with Brendan Lyng, Tomas Harrington, John McGrath and David Larkin not far behind. They came in for the finish, and David Mahon had maintained his momentum with him taking the gold spot. Next came Paul Doran, with a silver medal, and the first Strider man home. It was a toss-up between Scott James and Adam O’Connor, with them being so close together. Ultimately Adam took 4th with Scott in a very close 5th. Alan O’Connor came next, finishing with DMP’s Liam Collins. That team took gold, and it was well deserved. The Striders weren’t done yet though, with our second team racing to the finish. Brendan Lyng maintained his speed, with Colin Carney and Tomas Harrington just behind. It was a race for fourth spot between John McGrath and David Larkin, but Larkin took it in the end. The Second Team got silver, which gave Striders both 1st and 2nd in the team category. The other men in the race included some old club legends like Colm Stafford, Ted and Matt Flannelly and Pat Callaghan all having amazing runs. Our own coach John Kent ran, racing along with Ger Wallace and Eddie Murphy. Martin Kehoe, Pat Culleton and John Hickey had great races, bounding around the loop. Thomas Moran set a new PB, after having only ran a half-marathon two weeks ago. All the men made the club proud, with there being a wave of black and white in the race.It was a great night for us, with Striders bringing the most contestants out of any club. I’d be remiss to not mention our own George Delaney and Slaney Olympic, who organised the race. We’re lucky to have such a good racing scene here in Wexford, with so many people willing to work hard to organise races and the like. The club has changed from the days of only one or two racers, maybe a team of four if we were lucky. Now we have four or five teams competing in events and have amazing runners on each team. The Club has been built up by hard work and passion from the people who try hard to make it all work. Last night was a night which makes you proud to don the black and white. ... See MoreSee Less
