Wexford Intermediate Road Race, Enniscorthy, 25-Jun-2021

Our senior Striders excelled once again in Enniscorthy. The event was the Intermediate county road race, a 4km race for women and 8km for the men on the same looped course as last week’s county Novice.
After a long break from running, Sharon Kehoe showed that class is permanent when she finished a comfortable second in the women’s event. The race for fifth place was a very close affair with Katie Murphy narrowly missing out. A top 10 finish for Sandra Young and competitive placings by Alison Bennett and Aine Cullen secured gold team medals for the women.
Our newest Strider, Scott James, improved upon his Novice bronze to take silver in the men’s race. Scott was gaining rapidly on the eventual race winner, DMP’s Liam Collins, but the Wexford man had done enough earlier in the race to hold off Scott’s challenge. Colin Carney took 4th spot, narrowly ahead of Alan O’Connor in 5th. A battle royale took place between Tomas Harrington and John Byrne for 6th and the final scoring spot on the team with Tomas taking the honours. For the second race in a row that lads won team gold. The club’s strength in depth was evident with great runs (and no shortage of PBs) by Pat Culleton, Tom Moran, Liam Traynor, John Hickey, Eddie Murphy, Fabian Flood, Lala Murphy and Emmet Malone.
A big thank you once again to Slaney Olympic and the county board for organising the race. We do it all again in three weeks at the County Senior.
Go Striders!
