The Striders mens squad put up an heroic effort in the senior cross country championship, at Ferns, last weekend. Attempting to win the title for the first time since 1985, the thirteen man squad came mighty close and in the end finished a fantastic second place, in the team event. So much credit goes to the squad and coaches, who have worked so hard to take the club back to the forefront of Wexford cross country running. Following his recent victory in the novice event, Alan O’Connor was first Strider home, in fifth place. John McGrath and Brendan Lyng were in the lead group, from the start, and showed great resilience to finish in the top ten. With six to score in the team event, George Delaney, Sean Murphy and Paul Doran, gave it absolutely everything, finishing in the top twenty, to record an excellent team score. Continue reading

The U11 girls team of Heather Costello, Moya Corbett and Katie Costello all did really well and came very close to winning a team medal. Isabel Bawden was first Strider home in the next age group, finishing ahead of Leona Berry, with both girls well up the field. Erinn Shannon’s bronze medal was the first medal of the day for the girls, with Eve Byrne and Clodagh Foran also running well in the U15 event, over 3.5 km. After a fantastic display by the USAC juveniles, earlier in the day, the Striders Seniors teams well and truly made this a day to remember for the club. Thanks to lots of hard work from coach, John Kent, the Ladies team were in great form and it showed on the big day. Sonya Byrne and Ailish Browne were always towards the head of affairs and deservedly took Silver and Bronze medals respectively, in a quick time over the 3km course. With Lettie Myers and Sareen O’Farrell also finishing towards the top of the field, the Striders Ladies team just missed out on the top team spot, taking a well deserved team Silver.
