On Wednesday evening, the senior Striders were competing at Day 2 of the Wexford Track & Field Championship. There was plenty of excitement in both the track and the field events and having four Striders ladies teams face the starter in the 4 X 100m relay, was a real club highlight. Also noticeable was the large number of athletes progressing from our juvenile section to our senior section, with great success. Aedan Rogers, John McGrath and Pat O’Callaghan were all dual medal winners, in their respective middle distance races. Nic Walkden continues his fantastic first year in competitive athletics, winning both his middle distance and sprint events. After years of underage success, the Striders ladies Grace Costello, Rebecca Bawden and Alannah Byrne had a fantastic first, second and third in their 3,000m event. At the same distance, Emmett Malone had a solid run, finishing well up the field. At 800m, it was no surprise to see Leinster and National medal winner Sonya Byrne claim a county gold medal.
United Striders AC hosted a novel event on Friday 21st July 2017, at their home track, in the town park New Ross. Over one hundred club members, including juveniles, senior men and ladies, participated in relay format to complete a marathon. Owen Lennon, recent Leinster gold medal winner with the Wexford relay team got the event started, with a quick first lap. With a goal of beating ex club member Andy Ronan’s 1991 Boston marathon time of 2:11:27, all eyes were on the clock, during the evening. The half way time check confirmed that the Striders were just inside the target time, but with no room for error. When Aedan Rogers completed the last lap, he stopped the clock at 2:06:42, well inside the target time. Cue wild celebrations. Well done to all who participated in a marvellous event.
The Striders Juveniles were in great form at the National T&F Championships, with lots of great performances, medals, PB’s and a national champion. The boys did really well in the middle distance events, starting with Myles Hewlett running an excellent time of 1:40 in his 600m race to finish just outside the medals. Next up, Darragh Flannelly posted a PB of 2:20, in his 800m final, to continue his fantastic form this season. The first medal of the weekend was won by Adam O’Connor, with Bronze in his 800m event. With the event streamed live by Athletics Ireland, there were lots of Striders at home in New Ross watching Adam get into a 3 man lead group and finish the race in impressive fashion to secure a spot on the podium, with a PB time of 2:09.
