Well done to all the Striders who competed really well, at the Wexford T&F ‘B’ Championships, at Enniscorthy. We had 19 athletes participating, many for the first time, and all managed to win medals in at least one of their events. In the U9 age group we had Isabella O’Connor and Valeria Fernandez competing for the first time and the experienced Anna Murphy. All three were fantastic with Isabella excelling in the sprints, Valeria excelling in the relay events and Anna Murphy excelling in her long distance run. Gearoid Byrne came through his sprint heat and semi final, to make his mark, whilst Cormac Delaney, running the last leg of his relay, showed real speed to come from behind an win a medal for his team.
The Striders have a really strong bunch of U10’s and it was no surprise to see Heather Costello, Max Murphy and Conor Meehan win an amazing 7 medals between them. These guys were strong in all events, but the way they finished off their 300m races really impressed the coaches, with an eye on the upcoming cross country season. In the next age group there was plenty more success. Both Eoin Hannan and Moya Corbett made the podium 3 times, again impressing in all event, but particularly their distance races. Katie Costello, Keelan Ryan, Hugo Fernandez and Donnacha McCarthy were sensational in all their events and deserved all those medals.
Our U12 veterans, Luca O’Connor and Sean Lennon, performed really well, as always. It was no surprise to see the boys win medals in all the run / jump / throw events. These lads never miss a training session and always give 100%, so we were delighted they had such a successful evening. The same can be said of our final age group, the U13’s, with Finn Kelly, Ciaran McCarthy and Ben Myers all winning multiple medals. We are lucky to have a talented bunch of U13’s and these guys are well capable of many more big performances over the next few years.
Finally, thanks to Wexford County Board for organising this fantastic event and to all the volunteers who helped on the night.
