The Striders, both young and old, made the trip to the New Forest Golf Club, Tyrellspass, Co Westmeath, for some provincial cross country action. In the non-championship U10 boys race, both Ronan Shannon and Sam Myers were fantastic, and in a big field, our boys won individual medals. Over 2km, in the GU12 race, Leona Berry and Isabel Bawden were excellent. Both girls went out at a steady pace and on the second lap, made great progress to finish strongly. The BU12 race will go down in history as one of the most prolific races, at this level, in terms of medals. Myles Hewlett was right up with the pace, from the starting gun and stayed on strongly to finish fourth. Eoin Shannon put in a blistering second lap, to slice through the field and finish twelfth. Both boys earned, vary rare, individual provincial medals. With four to score for the club team, Ben Myers and Finn Kelly contributed with great finishing positions to win a provincial club medal for the Striders. The silver medal is only our second, in recent years, at this level. To top it off, Caolan Costello, Cosmo Hewlett and Seam Lennon all contributed to the Wexford team, which meant all seven boys picked up another provincial silver, in the county competition. Well done to our Dublin City Marathon legends Catherine Ronan, Mick O’Gorman, Colm Stafford, Emmett Malone, Lala Murphy and John Kent. After months of great training and living like monks, the Striders were fantastic on the big day, as we all knew they would. John Kent was first Strider over the line in a great time of 3:32, followed by Lala Murphy 3:34, Emmet Malone 3:39, Mick O’Gorman 3:49 and Colm Stafford 4:12. Our leading lady Catherine Ronan was also in great form completing the course in 3:57. Thanks to the online tracker, there were lots of club members, back home in New Ross, watching six dots moving slowly along a line, that was marked from 0 to 26.2. I guess you don’t have to be mad to be a Strider, but it sure does help.
Well done to our super six; all at the club are so proud of your great achievements today!
Sunny and windy Adamstown was the venue for the Juvenile Striders latest excellent squad effort, as the under age athletes competed from U9’s all the way up to the U17 age group. The Striders (and the Gusserane National School) were really well represented in the BU9 race, with a team of eight. In a big field of competitors, over 500m, Sean O’Brien entered the home straight with a narrow lead and he dug deep to register a great win, on his debut for the Striders. Jack Murphy and Jake Sutton, who was a year out of age, recorded top ten finishes. Powerful runs from Max Murphy, Liam Murphy, Ruari Lyng, Aidan Murphy and Gearoid Byrne, all competing for Continue reading
